Elite One Playoffs: Canon back on track as Gazelle bow out of the title race

By Darrion Abongwa

Canon of Yaounde has beaten Gazelle FA of Garoua 2-0, to get back on track, in their quest to ending their over two decades without a Cameroon league title.

Emmanuel Mahop's header late in the first half, and a Paul Henry Tchikeu's finish, were enough to secure all three points for the Kpa-kum, who bounced back after opening day defeat to Bamboutos FC of Mbouda.

Gazelle who on their part suffered a defeat to cotonsport in their first game, got to a flying start, with Sabo Abdoullahi, Alexis Yougouda Kada and Boris Ekotto, putting Canon's defence in difficulties.

At the other end, Joel Djonang, Sanda Meteke and Il-Telli Tchoanfine, keep tabs on Emmanuel Mahop, and also kept Tombi Alemi and Phillipe Essama Bengono under lock and key.

Goalkeeper Marcelin Mbahbi made a fine save to deny Emmanuel Mahop from close range before the half and hour mark, but was helpless when the giant forward headed in from a Paul Henry Tchikeu delivery, to put Canon in front with just a minute to the end of the first segment.

Both coach Souleymanou Aboubakar and Robert Leona made changes before the start of the second half. Pierre Francis Baliang was introduced in the place of Tombi Alemi on the side of Canon, why for Gazelle FA, star forward Calice D'or Nwatsock, came in for Seini Hamit.

It was Canon who looked the better side throughout the second, with Emmanuel Mahop guilty of wayward finishing. Ngong Neville Gama hit the upright before ceding his place to Joel Marius Ngon A Tiati. The latter set up Paul Henry Tchikeu, to swap in Canon's second goal with just three minutes of regulation time left to play, as Canon claimed all three points of the game.

With their second consecutive defeat, Gazelle FA is now out of the title race, while Canon of Yaounde have kept their title hopes alive, but now face a must win game against Cotonsport on Sunday. The last time Canon won a Cameroon league title, was in the year 2002.
