CAF U17: Cadet Lions Dumped Out At First Hurdle

By  Bernice Nchang

Cameroon’s U17 national side and defending champion of the CAF U17 trophy have  crashed out of the tournament in the first round. The cadet Lions lost to Burkina Faso by 2 goals to 1, despite taking the lead through Dorinel  Yondjo at the 61st minute.

Two quick goals  from behind by the Burkinabe in two minutes in Annaba on Sunday evening were enough to seal the cadet Lions fate in the tournament hosted by Algeria. The result also meant the Burkinabe finish second in the group with three points while Cameroon finish bottom after back to back losses to Mali and Burkina Faso.

Cameroon needed a draw to qualify after CAF modified the rule to select two best third sides.  Group C had just 3 teams after South Sudan was suspended.   A draw would have seen Cameroon and Congo sail through. But the cadet Lions ended the tournament bottom of their pool with zero point and one goal scored.

The quarter final line up is now complete with the tournament set to have a new champion following the elimination of Cameroon.
