Elite One: PWD, Yosa Take Steps Away from Drop Zone

By Abongwa Fozo

As the MTN Elite One Championship moves towards the business end, the rope is getting tighter on the necks of the two Northwest outfits, PWD Bamenda and Yong Sport Academy. But the last playing day seems to have offered some glimmer of hope for both teams.

Playing at home in Mbouda, Yong Sports Academy beat Fauve Azur by a goal –nil to move up to 21 points and two points away from the drop zone currently occupied by Yafoot on 19 points and Dragon nine points (already relegated). Yosa has six more points to play for with matches against Yafoot and Les Astres FC. Whereas Les Atres has three more matches to play, Yafoot has four, further compromising the chances of Yosa. The Yellow Marines of Bamenda will need to beat a resurgent Yafoot in their next match away to consolidate their position and hope for a result on the last day of play against Les Astres to be assured of their elite one status.

For PWD of Bamenda, a one-all-tie away in Mbankomo against Eding Sports surprisingly takes them away from the drop zone on goal difference. The Abakwa Boys count 18 points  with three goals deficit while Renaissance beat Djiko 3-1 to move to 18 points with a minus five goals  while Avon on minus eight goals drops to the bottom of the group on 18 points. PWD and renaissance both have four remaining matches and Renaissance three. PWD Next entertains Avion of the Nkam in a delay match on Saturday. The winner in this match takes a giant step towards safety. PWD is also due to play Canon of Yaounde in Mbouda, Cotonsport in Garoua and ends the league with a clash against relegation threaten renaissance of Ngoumou.

Playing their home matches away in the West region has greatly affected the Bamenda elite teams who are both struggling for their very survival. Many of their fans believe the situation will not have been the same if both teams where playing their home matches in Bamenda.
